The Red River Ranch near Torrey, Utah is nestled against the red cliffs of Capitol Reef National Park, creating the perfect backdrop to host a trail running event. It’s hard to believe that so soon after running among the red rocks you will be cruising singletrack through the pines and aspens along more than a dozen high mountain lakes, topping out on the tallest plateau in North America at over 11,000ft! Don’t underestimate this course or be fooled by the desert backdrop or the fact that you’re on a “plateau”- this is a high mountain course which starts at 7,000ft, quickly climbs to over 11,000ft, and stays at that elevation for nearly half of the distance of the race!

The 100 mile route follows the Great Western ATV trail through a spectacular display of sandstone past to the Government Creek aid station at mile 6. Soon thereafter, the long, sustained 4,000ft climb begins up onto the Aquarius plateau with the vegetation quickly transitioning to pines and aspens. At approximately mile 9, you'll pass by Lost Lake, which will be the first of many beautiful mountain lakes that you'll encounter on this route. After 4 miles of gradual climbing, you'll arrive to Donkey Reservoir Aid station at mile 13. From there things level off a bit comparitively as you pass by three gorgeous lakes on your way to Fish Creek Aid Station at mile 19.

From Fish Creek, you'll drop down a couple hundred feet before a steep 1,000ft push up onto the top of the plateau.

After a jaunt along the Rim Trail to some amazing overlooks, the route follows the Great Western Trail along the top of the plateau, with majestic views down into Capitol Reef National Park and the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. The trail then drops off the plateau to the 50 mile turnaround point near beautiful Boulder, Utah at the Chriss Lake trailhead.

The route is run on approximately 80% singletrack. The average high temps on the majority of the course will be upper 60′s due to the altitude. Pretty surreal to be overlooking the vast desert in July but running in such pleasant temps because you’re sitting on a shelf that’s 5,000ft above it :)

The 50 mile option begins with a shuttle to the 100 turnaround point at the Chriss Lake trailhead near Boulder and finishes at the Red River Ranch in Torrey, following the above mentioned route in reverse direction.

The 50K option begins with a shuttle ride to the Wildcat Ranger Station in between Torrey and Boulder, where it begins at the Great Western Trail access point. The route quickly climbs up onto the top of the plateau, where it links in with the main route at Meeks Lake and continues on to Chokecherry Aid Station at mile 7.5. The route then splits from the 50mi/100mi route through Beef Meadow for a more direct approach to Fish Creek Aid station and then ties back into the 50mi/100mi route, finishing at the Red River Ranch.

The 1/2 Marathon is a rugged and beautiful loop crossing mountain streams which begins with a short shuttle ride from the finish line to the starting point about two miles west of Teasdale. After two miles of climbing, runners will arrive at the first aid station next to Government Creek. From there, the trail continues to climb for two more miles along a lush forest path. It then splits from the main route and descends two miles down to Coleman reservoir through young aspen trees that have begun to reclaim an area scorched by a 2012 wildfire. From Coleman aid, the trail descends back past the starting point at mile 9 and then through the Red Rocks aid station at mile 11 on the way to the finish line at Red River Ranch.
