The Elkhorn Mountain Endurance 100k run was changed to a 50 mile run in the summer of 2005. For 2006 a 50K run will also be offered. These runs have been designed to show other ultra runners from all over the United States and Canada the beauty of Montana. The race directors are ultra marathoners and have competed in ultra races throughout the United States. They realized that the Elkhorn Mountains right in their own backyard contained some of the most aesthetic and challenging trails found anywhere. The first 100K race was run in 1989 when Jim and Bobbie Pomroy fulfilled a dream of one day sponsoring an ultra marathon in the Elkhorns when they designed the original Elkhorn Mountain Endurance Run course and held the first race. In the past both the 50K and 100k runs traversed some of Montana's most scenic wild country which is home to a wide variety of plants and animals.
The current 50 mile course consisted of approximately 38 miles of single track trail and 2 miles of unimproved jeep road and 10 miles of dirt Forest Service roads. There will be 6 well stocked aid stations on along the 50 mile course and the farthest a runner will have to run without an aid station will be about 8.5 miles.
The course has been accurately measured and will run through many of the areas covered by the initial race. The course itself will be as difficult as they come, but the 16 hour finisher’s time is well within the reach of any well-trained runner.

We've all seen it and most of us have done it ... 30 minutes (or less) into a race athletes are already looking for a port potty. The good news is that it doesn't have to be that way. The secret is a proper hydration plan before the gun goes off, and here's how you do it.
