Serving Other Souls (S.O.S.), a non-profit organization comprised of students from Franklin Regional Middle School, presents the 8th Annual "Miles of Smiles" 5K and 1 Mile Fun Walk
on Saturday, May 13th, 2017 with the 5K starting at 9 a.m. and the 1 Mile Fun Walk starting at 9:05 a.m.

Over the last eight races, the Miles of Smiles 5K, aka the "Miles of Smiles for Sunny" events have raised over $150,000 for its race namesake, Sunny Carney, and others fighting terminal
or life-altering, degenerate diseases. Sunny's legacy of fighting an incurable disease with grace, dignity, and courage is what made her a living legend in this and other communities.
Over the last 10 years, the Miles of Smiles 5K net proceed's have benefited families of Sunny Carney (5 times), Lorri Nixon (2 times), Kristin Croyle, Bruce Linhart, Susan Pinal, the Miracle League of Western PA, Sal DeFilippo, Heidi Scriven, Stephen Johnston, Robin Wareham, Christine Laliberte, and Brian Stroup.

To honor the memory of of those we have lost and those we still serve, SOS will soon be announcing our 2017 families to assist that are all battling forms of cancer. 80% of net proceeds of the 9th Annual Miles of Smiles 5K will be split between the selected families while 20% of net proceeds will be placed in a SOS bank account to support families suffering from cancer and its cost from after the race until next race cycle. We have changed this reward structure due to the amount of requests SOS receives during race off-season for financial support from cancer. Listed below is a quick bio on each family for this year's race:

Robin Wareham, 52, of Murrysville was diagnosed with rectal cancer in Nov 2015. Robin began treatment for her cancer shortly after that. She was briefly hospitalized with complications of her treatment, but she found a way to persevere through and finished treatment in Aug 2016. Robin is married to her husband, Jeff and their children are Matthew (16) and Michael (14). Michael is in SOS. After Robin completed her initial treatment regiment for rectal cancer, doctors discovered that the cancer had metastasized and moved to her lungs. On March 17th, 2017, Robin will have surgery on her one lung to remove the two spots on her one lung. The spot on her other lung will have to wait for a future surgery. This new diagnosis is why she was chosen a recipient for 2017 as well as a 2016 recipient.

Monica Pilyih a wife and mother of 3 daughters. She has dealt with health issues for 20 years being due to being diagnosed with ITP and RA . Last year, Monica received a diagnosis of breast cancer and lymphoma. Due to all the medical needs that Monica has faced, her family is facing extreme financial hardships. SOS hopes that the proceeds from the race can assist Monica and her family.

Ken has been out of work since the end of the month of October 2013 when he was diagnosed with three inoperable tumors on his spinal cord. Ken’s neurosurgeon recommended that he apply for disability. In June 2016, Ken was diagnosed with bladder cancer. He had surgery to remove it on August 4th, 2016. The surgeon stated he was able to remove all the cancer during the surgery, but stated that there was a 90% chance the cancer could return. Ken lives with his fiance, Lori, her son, Shayne (16), and his son, Justin (22). Ken had to return to limited work since Lori had back surgery and could not keep working as a nurse. All of these medical needs for this family have caused the family a financial crisis that SOS hopes the race proceeds can help.

The Chamberlain family has encountered many unfortunate events over the past three years. Beginning in February of 2013, Frank, Chris Chamberlain’s husband, was diagnosed with stage 4 pancreatic cancer. The doctors thought that he was having gallbladder issues never thinking it was something serious. Frank was doing well with treatment until in November when the chemo stopped working. He quickly deteriorated and passed away one day short of a year of his diagnosis in February of 2014.

In September of 2016, Chris Chamberlain had a mammogram done and docs found two tumors in her left breast. My doctor immediately sent her to a surgeon and they determined that she had stage 3 breast cancer. She is currently receiving chemo and will undergo surgery in March of 2017. After her surgery, Chris will have six weeks of radiation five days a week and hopefully have a good prognosis.

Our 5K and 1 Mile Walk is more than a sporting event, it is more like a carnival atmosphere. We will have a Chinese auction with tons of themed basket that in past years have included Samsung smart phones & tablets and signed sporting memorabilia from professional teams in Pittsburgh like the Steelers, Pirates, or Penguins. SOS will be selling donated baked goods at our bake sale. Annually, we look forward to spending time with you on May 13th, 2017 to share in the joy of witnessing to each other that we can make a difference in the lives of others if we offer our time, talent, or treasure.

Event Start Location
Boyce Park Ski Lodge (inside Boyce Park) off of Center Road (front entrance). Peirson Run Road (rear entrance) will be closed morning of the race. Course Description
Miles of Smiles 5K & 1 Mile Fun Run will start near the Boyce Park Ski Lodge. SOS runs the same course that the Stampede 5K runs in Boyce Park annually each July. We will start within the parking lot loop of the ski lodge, and the first portion of the race is a loop and a half around the parking lot of the lodge. At that point, the race turns into the heart of the park. The race proceeds past the entrance of the park off of Center Road to the turn around point in the race near the back entrance of the park off of Pierson Run Road. Once the turn around is reached, the race really ramps up with multiple down hill stretches that really allow a runner to go for a PR if they wish!

The Miles of Smiles 5K will recognize the top 2 overall male and female runners of the race. In addition, we will award Masters winners for the fastest male and female 40 years or older. SOS will also award first and second place in the following classes for both males and females: 9 & under; 10-14, 15-19; 20-29; 30-39; 40-49; 50-59; 60 & over
