Thanks for deciding to register for the Frigid 5 Miler!

9:00 am start time again this year.
We are happy to partner with Allegheny Parks Dept for another race.

We hope you will join us for a brisk run through the park in January. It will begin and end at the North Park Lodge. It is a fairly challenging, but great prep for the marathon.

This 9th annual event, produced by Elite Runners & Walkers will be a 5 Mile run through scenic North Park beginning at the Lodge and using the fairly challenging Lodge Loop passing the Boathouse and Ice rink and finishing back up at the Lodge. Staying true to its origninal heritage we have chosen a somewhat challenging course. What fun would it be to run on a cold January day without a little more challenge.

New This year: Since everyone has so many race shirts, every participant will receive a commemorative NECK GAITER , which can be worn in a multitude of ways to help you train no matter what the weather. All pre-registered participants (by 12/22/13) are guaranteed. All others while supplies last.

Event Start Location
North Park Lodge located on North Ridge Road in:

North Park
Allison Park, PA 15101

Course Description
The races take place entirely on paved roads. It is a loop route beginning and ending at the Lodge located along North Ridge Rd. in North Park. It runs through scenic and low traffic roads on some flat areas with a few challenging hills thrown in for fun. FYI, Great uphill finish. For those who know North Park, we are using the lodge loop.

Aid Stations will be every 1.5 miles.

Walkers in addition to runners are welcome and encouraged to participate.

Weather
As this is a winter race, we can expect anything from a mild day to bitter cold or snow or even bitter cold and snow. Since we love a challenge we will run no matter what nature tosses at us, unless the county police determine conditions are dangerous. We had negative 11 degrees windchill in 2010, and 6 inches of snow fell in 2009, and cold again with snow in 2011 and yet the park got the course ready for a winter run, so we expect to run no matter what. Dress for the conditions, run smart for the conditions, and we will all have a great time!

Weather Delay information
IF there is a delay for any severe weather event, we will post a cancellation notice on www.eliterunners.com by 6:30 am. We will also notify the television stations. Chances are unlikely that we will cancel as this is a planned winter event and the park has never let us down in getting our courses cleared in years past. However. we will absolutely defer to the safety personnel of the park and county as we pay them to keep us safe and we highly respect their judgement. A deferral date has not been set.

Directions
Take Rte. 79 to the Wexford Exit #22. Go East on Rte. 910 and follow for 4 miles to Pierce Mill Rd. Right onto Pierce Mill into the park. Follow signs to the Lodge up the big hill and then follow volunteers or signs to the designated parking areas. Due to limited parking on the top, we highly suggest you carpool as much as possible.

Parking
Limited parking at the top near the lodge. Please carpool and use the Ice Rink parking lot and use the hill up to the lodge as your warm-up.

When to Use Energy Gels and Hydration Drinks and Can They Be Used Together?
All athletes need three things: hydration, energy and electrolyte replacement. To perform at your best you want to get the proper amounts of each in perfect balance. The good news is that we make it easy to do using either e-Gel or e-Fuel.

Plantar Fasciitis
Experienced as heel pain when you take your first steps after getting out of bed or after sitting for a long period of time, plantar fasciitis is a running injury most frequently caused by an abnormal motion of the foot or too-tight calf muscles.

How to Avoid The Porta Potty During a Race
We've all seen it and most of us have done it ... 30 minutes (or less) into a race athletes are already looking for a port potty. The good news is that it doesn't have to be that way. The secret is a proper hydration plan before the gun goes off, and here's how you do it.

Recent Review: This was only my 2nd race. Challenging course. But it was worth it for all the pancakes afterwards.
